The Starry Night by Anne Sexton and Vincent Van Gogh Essay
The Starry Night by Anne Sexton and Vincent Van Gogh - Essay Example Sextonââ¬â¢s extreme tone reflects the energy of van Goghââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Starry Night.â⬠The work of art delineates ââ¬Å"the fire that seethed withinâ⬠van Gogh (Dietrich). The canvas is in unrest. Sextonââ¬â¢s sonnet likewise pulsates with profound tumult: The sky is hot, ââ¬Å"The night boils,â⬠(â⬠¦4); the stars are alive and move; ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the moon bulgesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (8) and brings forth life. The sonnet echoes the paintingââ¬â¢s dreamlike tone with its hot, emotional, flimsy voice. Sextonââ¬â¢s liberal utilization of action words like ââ¬Å"boil,â⬠ââ¬Å"bulges,â⬠ââ¬Å"push,â⬠ââ¬Å"swallows,â⬠â⬠splitâ⬠and ââ¬Å"suckedâ⬠show her inward unrest. With the exception of the quiet of the town, the sonnet portrays a universe of disturbance. Sextonââ¬â¢s tone passes on the message that her brilliant night, similar to her inward life, is in a condition of mature. Sextonââ¬â¢s sonnet is a blowout of symbolism. She coordinates the rich designs of van Goghââ¬â¢s sonnet with the skilful utilization of metaphorical language. Sexton makes van Goghââ¬â¢s energetic night a voracious mammoth: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦that incredible dragonâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (14) which is to eat up her. The thick, serpentine whirl of his brush turns into the ââ¬Å"â⬠¦old inconspicuous serpentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (10) which swallows the stars. Her words, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦in its orange ironsâ⬠(8), invoke a picture of the moon as a hostage who is compelled to bring forth the stars. The most striking picture is that of the solitary, dark tree outlined in the closer view of van Goghââ¬â¢s painting, which Sexton figuratively analyzes to a ââ¬Å"â⬠¦drowned womanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (3). Similarly as van Goghââ¬â¢s tree connects with the Heavens for help, Sexton delineates herself as a lost lady looking for comfort in the skies.

Dont Read This if you Already Go to MIT
Donât Read This if you Already Go to MIT The shadow of my plane, surrounded by rainbows Lately, life seems to be going my way. Case in point number 1: As I was returning to Boston recently, we flew through a cloud-bank and I was able to take the crazy picture above. Now, I know that it was really a trick having to do with optics and the water droplets in the cloud and the angle of the sun and whatnot. Nonetheless, what are the odds? Case in point number 2: I was running late for class on Thursday. I parked my bike, quickly locked it, and jogged toward the South door of the building. Then I saw my professor heading for the same door! He was farther away than I was, and hadnt seen me yet. If I kept going, I would beat him to class but he would see me walking in just before him (and obviously late.) So I circled to the North side of the building and made it to the room before he did, undetected. If I had been 10 seconds later, if hed looked up, or if there hadnt been another entrance, all would have been lost. Case in point number 3: Its the week before Thanksgiving, and my roses are still blooming. Also, I live in a castle (see the stone behind the rose) Case in point number 4: This is where it starts to get really good. Im hoping the MIT students who didnt listen to me at first have returned to work by this point. In this shaky economy, I know many people who havent found work. I even have one friend whose summer internship just canceled on him because theyre in financial trouble. Despite this I landed a definite job with a company I am CRAZY about! Stroud Consulting is a relatively new Operations and Management Consulting company. Basically, they hire out their problem-solving skills to a lot of huge companies who want to be more efficient or productive. They go in with big goals, get told that its impossible, and then produce the results they promised. Sounds like a good challenge :) The people are great, the job will change with each new client, and I am really excited to start! I just have to finish this thesis The Official Employment Contract Case in point number 5: My classes lately have been all about how people learn. So we basically do activities and play games all hour to see how good they are at teaching us material. Heres my team playing with Legos and pulleys: Yun 12 and Ken 11 building a pulley structure Yun 12 and Ken 11 demonstrate our pulley structure in action (video) We also get to play with higher-tech sorts of games. While other people are working on Mastering Physics tutorials, Iâm playing Waker. Waker was developed at the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT game lab this past summer to showcase some elements of physics. All of GAMBITâs games have educational objectives. A quick perusal of the games on their website shows coverage of everything from neurotransmitters to political oppression. Waker was a fun way to spend my Saturday morning. If you try it out, or any other games on the site, let me know what you think! My favorite screen The adorable avatar, jumping Running through another scene Isnt it a beautiful game? Now, no firsting on this post unless you beat Waker first!

Top 7 Cliché Ideas You Should Avoid Including into Your Leadership Essay
Top 7 Clichà © Ideas You Should Avoid Including into Your Leadership Essay Letââ¬â¢s face it: the majority of people hate clichà ©s. Yes, there are some individuals who like them because clichà ©s are their comfort zone. But we doubt that your professor whom you need to write an essay falls under this category. If you wish to avoid stereotypes notions, you need to avoid them not only in your style of writing but at the level of the topic as well. While writing a leadership essay, you need to come up with original ideas. We know itââ¬â¢s hard because this issue has been popular for at least 5000 years, but itââ¬â¢s not impossible. To help you with this ââ¬Å"uphill struggleâ⬠, weââ¬â¢ve put down a list of top leadership clichà ©s that you should avoid at all costs. If you follow our advice, you will make your writing more interesting and profound! 1. Thà µre Are No Stupid Quà µstions Yes, there are. In fact, there are loads of them, and you perfectly understand that. If you want to write a good leadership essay, itââ¬â¢s better to promote the idea that a true leader has to identify and prevent stupid questions. If they still happen, itââ¬â¢s best to highlight and explain why they are silly (of course in the right manner). 2. The Custà ¾mer Is à lways Right If you have ever worked part-time in a customer support field, youââ¬â¢ll know that itââ¬â¢s not true. For a good leadership, itââ¬â¢s important sometimes to stand the ground of your employee in front of a client. 3. Give It Your Best Shot And what is this supposed to mean? Go and shoot something or somebody? A real leader must explain what expectations he/she has without scattering vague phrases. There are also other word combinations that fall into this category like ââ¬Å"do your bestâ⬠, ââ¬Å"go above and beyondâ⬠, etc. 4. Donââ¬â¢t Bother Me until You Have a Solution This is another clichà © that makes people flinch when they hear something similar from their bosses. If a subordinate comes with a problem to the senior, the latter must sit and puzzle out the issue to understand whether there is a solution in the first place. 5. Think outside the Box And work outside the office. And eat outside the canteen. This is a threadbare motivational phrase that stopped inspiring people years ago. So, why do leaders still use it? 6. Appreciate Every Opinion Someone who is in charge should be able to see valuable opinions and mark them out for others to appreciate. Itââ¬â¢s a skill that is hard to hone, and, besides, itââ¬â¢s always easier to say that a true leader must take into account all points of view. 7. Failure Is Not an Option Among many mottos of Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, there is a phrase ââ¬Å"Fail fasterâ⬠. He has even a whole theory that failures lead to success and it doesnââ¬â¢t correspond with one of the main leadership clichà ©s. So, do you think you should mention it in your essay? Avoid these stereotypes to prevent your professor from doing a facepalm and add more interesting ideas that really work nowadays. We wish you good luck with that! At AdvancedWriters.com company you can pay for essay writing online. Our experts have great writing skills to handle your leadership assignment. 5.00 avg. rating (1 vote)

Goodman â⬠¢ CoGnitive enhanCement, CheatinG, and aCComplishment Rob Goodman Cognitive Enhancement, Cheating, and Accomplishment ABSTRACT. An ethics of enhancement should not rest on blanket judgments; it should ask us to distinguish between the kinds of activities we want to enhance. Both students and academics have turned to cognition-enhancing drugs in significant numbersââ¬âbut is their enhancement a form of cheating? The answer should hinge on whether the activity subject to enhancement is zero-sum or non-zero-sum, and whether one is more concerned with excellence in process or excellence in outcome. Although assistance is now available to those who need it, domestic violence is still a problem that must be dealt with. The victims of domestic violence have real problems that need attention, but it seems as if the issues these people face are not top priority. There are multiple things that are going on in a domestic violence situation, but to someone on the outside looking in, the obvious choice would be to get out of the situation and leave. Mark Prior Free Essays
Luck has had little to do with Mark Priorââ¬â¢s success as a ballplayer. It was his dedication andà talent that landed Prior in the major leagues and perhaps a lack of luck that attributed to the right-à handed pitcher being sidelined during the peak of his career. But at age 26, Prior is optimistic ofà a comeback. We will write a custom essay sample on Mark Prior or any similar topic only for you Order Now When Prior debuted with the Chicago Cubs on May 22, 2002, he was nothing short ofà impressive which should have been expected considering he was the second overall pick in theà draft. His record earned him all-star status as he was chosen to play in the 2003 All-Star game inà only his first full season in the major leagues. Priorââ¬â¢s pitching technique seemed flawless and was considered a combination of the styles ofà Greg Maddox and Roger Clemens. His first full season with the Chicago Cubs ranked him thirdà in the National Leagueââ¬â¢s Cy Young Award voting with a record of 18 wins and only six losses.à Prior became well known for his 90-plus mph fastball, curveball, slurveball and changeup. But freak accidents and injuries began to disrupt his career in the making. Numerous stints onà the disabled list and now an entire season on hold to recuperate from shoulder surgery haveà many questioning the future of the once valued Cubs pitcher. Born September 7, 1980, Prior attended University of San Diego High School where heà excelled on the ball field. As a 1998 graduate, he had a 0.93 earned run average. Prior was thenà drafted by the New York Yankees in the amateur draft but a contract was never negotiated andà signed. He began his college education at Vanderbilt University, the same school his father attended.à During his sophomore year, Prior transferred to the University of Southern California (USC).à There he was honored as one of the best collegiate athletes in the country. Prior pitched for USC for two seasons and earned numerous awards including seven nationalà Player of the Year awards. As a junior, his record was 15-1 with six complete games and threeà shutouts. His ERA was 1.69. He earned the prestigious Golden Spikes Award. He also led theà team to the 2000 College World Series. Prior entered the draft again and this time he was chosen as the second pick overall in theà draft. As he concentrated on his baseball career and the hope of one day being called up to playà for the Chicago Cubs, Prior continued his college education on a part-time basis and eventuallyà earned a business degree in 2004 from the USC Marshall School of Business.à In 2003, his first full season as a pitcher for the Cubs, his talent was obvious as he tallied anà 18-6 win-lose record despite missing three starts due to an injury. Prior was injured when heà collided on the field with the Atlanta Braves second baseman Marcus Giles. Both Prior and Gilesà were scheduled to play in the 2003 All-Star Game but missed due to their injuries.à Prior was voted Player of the Month in August and September. He went on to earn a 10-1à record as the Cubs made their way into the playoffs. That led to the infamous fan interferenceà incident in which Steve Bartman caught a fly ball hit into the stands that could have easily beenà caught by the Cubs outfielder. The Cubs ended up losing the game and Prior suffered through theà loss. In 2004, Prior missed the first two months of the season with an Achilles tendon injury.à Although rumors surfaced that Prior needed reconstructive elbow surgery, he returned to theà mound with a less than stellar performance with six wins and four losses and an ERA of 4.02.à Again in 2005, Prior started the season on the disabled list. He returned and was pitching upà to par until May 27th when another misfortune came his way. Prior was pitching to Brad Hawpe, an old rival from LSU who hit a three-run homerun offà Prior in the College World Series. As they faced off in the major leagues, Hawpe drilled a pitchà and sent a 117 mph line drive back to Prior, hitting him in the right elbow and putting him on theà disabled list with a compression fracture. Prior finished the season 11-7 in 27 starts.à During spring training the following year, Prior began to feel a stiffness in his throwingà shoulder. He was put on a slow pitch program and sent for tests that revealed he had a strainedà shoulder. He was put on the disabled list for 15 days in March missing the start of the 2006à season. When he returned, he gave up six runs to the Detroit Tigers in the first inning. He wentà on to earn a devastating 0-4 record with a 7.71 ERA and was once again put on the disabled listà after straining his left oblique during batting practice. He returned to the minor leagues and threeà games later, Prior earned his first win of the year against the Pittsburgh Pirates. By August of 2006, he was back on the disabled list with tendonitis for the remainder of theà season. His record was 1-6 and ERA was a high 7.21.During the off-season, he complained of a loose shoulder and when conditioning did notà improve the situation, Prior sought medical treatment and discovered he would need arthroscopicà surgery on his right shoulder. In April, Prior underwent surgery and it was successful but put an early end to the 2007à season before it even began for him. Because of his age, doctors see no reason Prior cannotà return to pitching in 2007. RESOURCES MLB Advanced Media, LP (2001-2007) Chicago Cubs. Child Soldiers free essay sample
Good morning ladies and gentleman, youth from around the world, prestigious guests and esteemed politicians. Iââ¬â¢m Laban Pulea and I represent youth from the rural mining community of Mount Isa in Western Queensland, Australia. Today I am here today to discuss the contentious issue of child soldiers and inform you of the implications this issue has for our modern society. Despite popular opinion, this issue is prevalent in our post-modern world and is far too widespread to ignore. The contentious theme of child soldiers is represented as atrocious and an infringement of human rights in a diverse range of literary and non- literary texts such as the movie Blood Diamond, the poem Child Soldier Diary and the article Stolen kids turned into terrifying killers. These notions work to emphasize and further naturalise the fundamental ideologies concerning child soldiers in western society. When composing texts, authors are tremendously influenced by their socio-cultural context. We will write a custom essay sample on Child Soldiers or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Consequently , the prevailing attitudes, values and beliefs and the extent to which they accept or challenge these, undoubtedly influence the shaping of these depictions of this particular issue which in turn positions readers to adopt a dominant readings of the texts. Paragraph 1: When examining literary and non-literary texts, child soldiers are often portrayed as having their rights of childhood innocence stripped from them by abysmal and unethical rebel leaders. The 2006 film Blood Diamond, directed by Edward Zwick, promotes this depiction and works to endorse western methodologies, beliefs and ideologies counter to the controversial issue of child soldiers in Africa. The film writers and directors position viewers to agree with dominant interpretations pertaining to child soldiers and their severe loss of innocence. (Play video of boy killing guy without knowing while blind folded) As seen in this extract, the loss of the childââ¬â¢s innocence is foregrounded and is further intensified by the reactions of the rebel leaders. Furthermore, this example exacerbates assertions of guerrilla military leaders exploiting children and their rights to an innocent childhood for their own selfish political schemas simply stating, ââ¬Å"It is for a good causeâ⬠. The aforementioned examples, which are privileged and mimicked in many similar texts, align with western mindsets on the theme of child soldiers. The relevance of these portrayals is as significant as the argument of this issue itself; subsequently, representing a violation of human rights and compelling us to question our humanity. As a result, we see that these children are conscripted to become instruments of war, to kill and be killed; child soldiers are forced to give the same violent expression to towards their communities that the rebel adults give themselves. Need to put something else in here to tie up this point and link to next paragraph. Paragraph 2: This confrontational issue of child soldiers is characterized in western texts as unjust and an intrusion of human rights. These concepts work to emphasize and further problematize the fundamental ideologies regarding child soldiers. The Prose a Child Soldier Diary, By Koko Latt commonly known as Mike, a former child soldier, utilises illustrative language which works to epitomise these western ideologies, opinions and creeds for the provocative issue of child soldiers. The author of the prose positions the viewers to feel melancholic towards the childââ¬â¢s right to an unsophisticated childhood and shocking loss of innocence. The extract portrays a cruel loss of innocence and is foregrounded in stanzaââ¬â¢s 12-15, ââ¬Å"I want to play football, Rather than shooting people, I want to sleep in my Mumââ¬â¢s arms, Rather than killing peopleâ⬠. The example impairs allegations of paramilitary leaders manipulating children for their own egotistical agendas. The abovementioned epitomizes notions of child soldiers which are utilized and mirrored in many texts. The prose authenticates western beliefs and ideologies concerning the issue of child soldiers. The relevance of these portrayals is crucial as the confrontational subject of child soldiers indeed does represent forfeiture to their virtue and denigrates our humanity. This is among the saddest sight these days seeing the image of hundreds of thousands of children kidnapped and lured into being child soldiers. (Sir Roger Moore) Paragraph 3: When examining literary and non-literary texts, child soldiers are often branded in western texts as intolerant and an invasion of human rights. These perceptions work to highlight and further problematize the prevailing ideologies regarding child soldiers. The Article Stolen kids turned into terrifying killers, By Ann ONeill CNN, further depersonalises these child soldiers by telling us that there very vulnerability makes them attractive to the men leading militias, manipulating them to do the unspeakable without question or protest, because their morals and value systems are not yet fully formed. This verifies western beliefs and ideologies relating to guerrilla military leaders exploiting children and their rights to an innocent childhood for their own self-centred political agendas. In additional, some children are kidnapped from their schools or their beds, some are recruited after seeing their parents slaughtered, and some may even choose to join the militias as their best hope for survival in war-torn countries. Once recruited, many are brainwashed, trained, given drugs and then sent into battle with orders to kill. The relevance of these depictions are crucial as the confrontational subject of child soldiers indeed does represent a breach of their human rights and degrades our humanity. As westerners we cannot begin to comprehend the psychological and physical pain child soldierââ¬â¢s face each day.

Discuss the View That Liberty and Equality Are Incompatible free essay sample
Discuss the view that liberty and equality are incompatible In this essay I aim to discuss the view that Liberty and Equality are incompatible. This view was put forward by Lord Acton when he said ââ¬Å"the passion for equality made vain the hope of freedomâ⬠. However, the issue of compatibility relies on how you define the terms Liberty and Equality because, in the words of W. B Gallie, both liberty and equality are ââ¬Å"essentially contested conceptsâ⬠and there are therefore different interpretations of each concepts meaning. The contemporary political thinker Isaiah Berlin in his book, ââ¬ËTwo Concepts of Libertyââ¬â¢, distinguished between a positive concept of freedom and a negative concept of freedom. Equality is split into three interpretations and they are Formal Equality, Equality of Outcome and Equality of Opportunity. I will conclude that in the words of Hobhouse ââ¬Å"the struggle for liberty, is the struggle for equalityâ⬠, hence the two concepts are more compatible than they are different. The first interpretation of Liberty is Negative Freedom which is concerned with ââ¬Ëfreedom fromââ¬â¢-the absence of restrain, interference or impediment and believes that you are only free to the extent you are not being constrained. The first strand of Equality that I will compare Negative Liberty with is Formal Equality which argues that because we are all human beings we are all equal because of a shared human essence and therefore we are entitled to be treated with equal respect and dignity. Formal Equality is based around treating individuals with equal dignity, in the words of Immanuel Kant individuals should not be treated as a ââ¬Ëmeans to an end, not ends in themselvesââ¬â¢. Clearly the sweeping redistribution of income would use individuals for a wider aim of providing an equal start in life for all and hence undermine the Kantian Dictate that underpins Formal Equality. Similarly, Negative Liberty is a not a distributive ideal as it believes in a minimal state and laissez faire free market economics. Indeed, Classical Liberals such as Nozick who would advocate Negative Liberty believe that the welfare state and the taxation needed to fund it is ââ¬Ëakin to forced labourââ¬â¢. Therefore Negative Liberty is compatible with Formal Equality because neither of them are distributive ideals. The second strand of Equality to be compared with Negative Liberty is Equality of Opportunity Equality of Opportunity is a conception which believes in giving individuals an equal start in life so that through their natural aptitude and talents they will become unequal and forge ahead of others-this conception is underpinned by the idea of a Meritocracy similar to the one outlined by Plato in ââ¬ËThe Republicââ¬â¢. Whether Negative Liberty is incompatible with Equality depends on which strand of Equality of Opportunity is being referred to. Equality of opportunity is divided into two strands; the Minimal Conception which is concerned with equality before the law, and the Substantive Conception which believes that in order to have a genuinely equal start in life adjustments must be made for social and cultural inequalities. The Minimal Conception is compatible with Negative Liberty as neither of them advocates redistribution or government intervention. Whilst the Substantive Conception is not compatible with Negative Liberty as it requires government intervention and redistribution to correct for inequalities and provide for example, quality education for all to give every child an ââ¬Ëequal opportunity to become unequalââ¬â¢. The final strand of Equality to be compared with Negative Liberty is Equality of Outcome. Equality of Outcome concerns itself with everyone finishing the ââ¬Ërace of lifeââ¬â¢ in the same position and this would involve the equalisation of living standards, social circumstances and wages. Only Marxists would argue for absolute equality of wealth but not even they advocate complete Equality of Outcome because they believe in allocating resources ââ¬Ëfrom each according to his abilities to each according to his needsââ¬â¢ and because peopleââ¬â¢s needs differ some need more material rewards than others- As Aristotle highlighted in ââ¬ËThe Politicsââ¬â¢, injustice arises only when equals are treated unequally, but also when unequalââ¬â¢s are treated equally. Therefore the case for Equality of Outcome is really the debate about redistribution, and clearly therefore this is not compatible with Negative Liberty as it advocates minimal state intervention. Positive Liberty however, is concerned with ââ¬Ëfreedom toââ¬â¢ and is split into three strands- Freedom as Autonomy, Freedom as Political Participation and Freedom as Self Realisation. Equality. Freedom as Self Realisation is concerned with giving individuals the opportunities they need to realise their potential which then will make them more free. As most Modern Liberals such as T. H Green and Hobson or Social Democrats would agree, Freedom as Self Realisation is more the modern strand of Positive Liberty and therefore I will focus on this interpretation of Positive Freedom. When comparing Positive Liberty and Formal Equality I would argue that they are not compatible because Positive Liberty is about giving people the opportunity to realise their potential through the welfare state and redistribution of material wealth whereas those who advocate Formal Equality would argue that redistribution violates the Kantian dictate which underpins the concept of Formal Equality. However, it could be argued that because Formal Equality is about every single individual feeling self worth and respect, if someone has no opportunity to realise their skills and talents, what will happen to their feelings of self worth? Hence possibly, there is an area of compatibility between the concepts. In comparing Equality of Opportunity with Positive Liberty again, you must consider both interpretations of Equality of Opportunity. The Minimal Conception would be compatible with Positive Liberty as if you are all equal before the law, and there are no legal impediments then you are able to realise your potential and achieve Freedom as Self Realisation. The Substantive Conception is also compatible with Positive Liberty because by adjusting for social and cultural inequalities will give all individuals the opportunity to realise their talents and skills and reap the rewards from developing and exercising these talents- Freedom as Self Realisation. In remembering that Equality of Outcome is not exercised in its pure form and is therefore more about moving towards a more egalitarian society through redistribution of material rewards to ensure equal outcomes in life for everyone, clearly there is a comparison between this and Positive Freedom as Self Realisation because it allows everyone to have the resources they need to

Th fed-how it manages the economy and the federal open market committe Essay
Th fed-how it manages the economy and the federal open market committe - Essay Example The fed uses its monetary policy to influence the availability and cost of money and credit to help promote national economic goals (Federalreserve. Gov). Among these functions the FOMC is responsible for the open market operations (buying and selling of government bonds to the market) function of the Fed. With the use of this tool through FOMC, the Fed manages the economy by balancing the balancing the interest rate according to the economic objective of the government. In simple language, FOMC can help expand the economy by reducing the cost of money to business by lowering the interest rates that would encourage them to expand their business operation which would in turn have a ripple effect of job creation, increased domestic spending and higher tax collection. During an overheated expansion of the economy, monetary policy can also be used to manage its ill effect which is usually inflation (too much money circulating in the economy). This can be done by raising the interest rates or cost of borrowing which would constrict the money supply and therefore arrest inflation. This function ââ¬Å"mops outâ⬠excessive liquidity in the market to abate the effect of an ââ¬Å"overheatedâ⬠economy by raising interest rates which would otherwise led to an ââ¬Å"overheated economyâ⬠. During a crisis such as the recent financial crisis that begun late of 2008, monetary policy was used to increase money supply by lowering the interest rates to push for an expansionary economy and abate the effect of the crisis. In the 2008 crisis, the Fed pegged ââ¬Å"short-term interest rates to near zeroâ⬠and bought ââ¬Å"huge amounts of long-term Treasury debt and mortgages to push down long-term ratesâ⬠(Wessel). The objective of adopting this monetary policy through FOMC was (1) signal that the Fed would keep short-term rates low for a long time, (2) drive long-term consumer and business borrowing rates lower

Domestic Violence Campaign in Malaysia
Domestic Violence Campaign in Malaysia Introduction What is domestic violence? Domestic violence is define as any form of aggressive and violent behaviour afflicted on family members or partners, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, culture or background (ââ¬Å"Definition,â⬠n.d.). On 8th March 2014, the campaign #NoExcuseForAbuse was launched in conjunction with International Womenââ¬â¢s Day. The campaign is hosted by Womenââ¬â¢s Aid Organisation (WAO) which is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Malaysia. The organization aims to promote and create respect, protection and fulfillment of equal rights for women. The idea is that no one deserves to be abuse (About us, n. d., ââ¬Å"WAO Vision and Missionâ⬠). For more than six months of planning, the campaign was brought to life by Art Director, Justin Phang and his team and it was successfully launched at Publika, Kuala Lumpur on 8th March 2014. The campaign is supported by Studio DL, Publika, TWBA Kuala Lumpur, My Hero Hypermarket and the US Embassy. Research In Malaysia, 39% of women are estimated to have faced domestic violence, but they often hide the truth of this social problem due to the traditional belief in the privacy of the family and the closeness of marriage relationships. According to a national research study in Malaysia which is conducted by WAO between 1990 and 1992, 1.8 million or 36% of women above the age 15 were beaten by their partners. In 1989, only 909 of them actually reported violence to the police (Domestic Violence, n.d., ââ¬Å"The Malaysian Context,â⬠para. 1). Many women who face domestic abuse may experience difficulty in understanding and handling the matter. They may not even know the abuse and continue to justify it ignorantly. Many of them do not know their rights and what to do if they are being abused by their partners. Therefore, the Domestic Violence Act was implemented in 1996 to protect women from being battered and abused. Domestic violence does not just affect women but also children. Children will be affected not only physically but also mentally. They will feel powerless and have low self esteem. Many of them may not trust people easily anymore. Besides that, many children who witness abuse will either become withdrawn, turn aggressive, or they may exhibit bullying behaviour towards other children.(The Effects of Domestic Violence (n.d.) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/The+Effects+of+Domestic+Violence+on+Children_106_62_1.htm) Based on the story of Sanjeev, a witness of domestic violence that we found in our research, Sanjeev started to witness his father abusing his mother when he was only two years old. He realized that his mother was beaten by his father even before he was born at a later time. In one particular incident, Sanjeev witnessed his father tried to hit his mother by using a chair and threatened her with a knife. Sanjeev saw all these through a keyhole. At that time, his brothers and sisters were with him. He proclaimed, Feel like kicking him!! One cent also wont give him! and Hes no more in my family, when he was asked about how he felt towards his father. (The Effects of Domestic Violence (n.d.) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/The+Effects+of+Domestic+Violence+on+Children_106_62_1.htm) Domestic violence brings bad impact to children. Children are weak and helpless witnesses of the violence that happens in their homes because they are no able to oppose. Mothers always feel that it is hard to escape from their abusive partners and tell themselves to stay until their children grown up to give them a better and complete condition for development. It happens as the father is the real economical support of the family. However, these experiences of growing up in an abusive environment might have a long-term impact on childrenââ¬â¢s lives. (The Effects of Domestic Violence (n.d.) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/The+Effects+of+Domestic+Violence+on+Children_106_62_1.htm) The witnessing of domestic violence by children is a psychological abuse for the child. The childs development of self and social ability will be affected by the abusive action of adult. They will feel fear thus causing them to feel that they live in an unsafe and unstable condition when threaten and abused through verbal or physical. All these factors contribute to an unhealthy condition for child growth. (The Effects of Domestic Violence (n.d.) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/The+Effects+of+Domestic+Violence+on+Children_106_62_1.htm Action The main goal of the campaign is to raise public awareness and education towards domestic violence. The campaign hopes to encourage women who are abuse either physically, mentally or emotionallyto reach out for aid. It aims to educate the public on the issue and provides a channel for victims to seek for help.#NoExcuseForAbuse (2014,March 8) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/news_details.php?nid=320ntitle=#NoExcuseForAbuse+ This objective is in line with its organization, WAO which is to offer emotional and social support and care to women. Asides from that, the organisation goals which is to spread the awareness of violence against women to public and related agencies is also publicized through this campaign. About us (n.d.) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/About+Us_3_3_1.htm The campaign targets the beginning stage of domestic violence in which the situation has not aggravated into a serious state. It is generally aimed at women who are under abuse and are not sure whether the experience that they are going through is normal. They hope to send out the message that any sort of abuse whether it is physical, verbal or emotional should not be tolerated. Hence the slogan, ââ¬Å"Be it physical, verbal or emotional, thereââ¬â¢s #NoExcuseForAbuseâ⬠.#NoExcuseForAbuse (2014,March 8) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/news_details.php?nid=320ntitle=#NoExcuseForAbuse+ Communications In order to achieve the campaignââ¬â¢s goal, several events had been organized to ensure its success. Firstly, an installation art exhibition was held at Publika, Kuala Lumpur from 8th March till 17th March 2014. Subsequently, it was held at My Hero Supermarket in Puchong and Sri Damansara from 22nd March till 31 March 2014.The exhibition portrays hand-stitched words of the voices of victim survivors on blouses. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s alright, he apologised. He said heââ¬â¢ll never do it again.â⬠and ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m afraid of him, but leaving him will bring shame to my familyâ⬠weresome of the voices featured on the blouses. Theaim of the exhibition is to create the same feelings and thoughts of what the victims has felt.#NoExcuseForAbuse (2014,March 8) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/news_details.php?nid=320ntitle=#NoExcuseForAbuse+ Secondly, posters of high profile women wearing the t-shirts with the message ââ¬Å"Be it physical, verbal or emotional, #NoExcuseForAbuseâ⬠were release online on social media. 27 women pledging their support for the campaign namely, YB Hajah Nancy Shukri (Minister in the Prime Ministerââ¬â¢s Department), YB Hannah Yeoh (Selangor Assembly Speaker), YB NurulIzzah (MP for LembahPantai) and YB Mas ErmieyatiSamsudin (Putri UMNO Chief)were featured on the online posters. The campaign encourages the public to send in their pledge of support by taking photos and posting them on social media with tag #NoExcuseForAbuse.#NoExcuseForAbuse (2014,March 8) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/news_details.php?nid=320ntitle=#NoExcuseForAbuse+ Lastly, a helpline was also released on the day the campaign was launched. TINA (Think I Need Aid) is a SMS helpline where members of the public may message to seek for advice or to report any suspicious case of abuse that they know.It is the first of itââ¬â¢s kind in Malaysia and they operate from Monday to Friday, 9.00 am till 5.30 pm. Advocacy officer, Sally Wangsawijaya (2014) said that victims especially the younger generation will find the SMS helpline more preferable as it will be like an informal conversation and they can remain anonymous. Additionally, it will also be a safer method for the victims to seek for help if the culprit is nearby. She noted that the victims will be referred to social worker when they are ready as consent is needed before the victims can be counselled. #NoExcuseForAbuse (2014,March 8) Retrieved from http://www.wao.org.my/news_details.php?nid=320ntitle=#NoExcuseForAbuse+ Evaluation Basing on the data and information that we have collected, we came to an agreement that this campaign has been effective in trying to raise public awareness and education towards domestic violence. As one of the main objectives of the campaign is to reach out to those who are in doubt and confuse about the happenings in their relationship, an installation art exhibition has been launched to inform the public on this matter. We agree that this method is effective in relaying its message as it aims to portray the similar feeling that is experienced by the victims through a display of hand-stitched words on blouses that represents the voices of the victim survivors. By putting ourselves in the victimââ¬â¢s shoe, we feel that this exhibition is able to create the necessary motivation and encouragement to speak out and to seek for appropriate help. In addition, we feel that the pledge of support given by 27 high profile women volunteers is able to send out the message that women can be strong and independent on their own and they should not succumb to abuse. This action is in line with the campaignââ¬â¢s main message which is ââ¬ËBe it physical, verbal or emotional, thereââ¬â¢s #NoExcuseForAbuseââ¬â¢. Asides from that, we believe that the SMS helpline, TINA (Think I Need Aid) that was set up is a smart move to further encourage victims of domestic violence to reach out for help. Josiah, I. (n.d). The thought of calling might be too much and speaking through the phone may also pose danger especially if the perpetrator is nearby. My teammates and I agree that calling might not be the best option for the victims to voice out as some of them could be in doubt and they are worry about the consequence of their actions. We believe that the victims will feel safer to reach out by messaging as they can remain anonymous. Moreover, the victims will not miss out any message that is being relayed as the message sent out could be reread. This method is useful and more convenient to those who might be engage during daytime and to victims where the abuser is nearby. All in all, we would like to conclude that the campaign, #NoExcuseForAbuse has been effective in relaying out its message which is to raise public awareness and education towards domestic violence whilst providing a helpline to those in need. However, we feel that the campaign has yet to be exposed to the whole of Malaysia as it has been launched for only a short period of time and currently there are no on-going events or activities. Fyne Piece of Marketing Case Study
CASE STUDY 1. 1 A ââ¬ËFYNEââ¬â¢ PIECE OF MARKETING As the strode purposefully into the board room to make his presentation to the firmââ¬â¢s monthly directorââ¬â¢s meeting, Fred Fahr, General Manager of Fyna Foods Ltd, felt just great. His confidence was that of someone who knows he has faced a problem and come up with the right answers. ââ¬ËLadies and gentlemen,ââ¬â¢ he began, ââ¬Ëas you are aware, two months ago we were given the opportunity to supply the Beefies Hamburger Chain with their new Supa-Long French fries. At the time, we all agreed this was great potential business for Fyna Foods, but that it also posed a major problem for us ââ¬â what to do with the excess potato left over after we supply Beefies with the extra-length fries. Unfortunately, we still havenââ¬â¢t been able to come up with a perfectly square potato! To dump this excess material would mean almost certainly making a loss on the Supa-Long Fires business. I am very pleased to be able to report to you today; however, that my team has come up with what we feel is a pretty fine solution. Fred deliberately paused as he sensed the increased air of anticipation around the table. Even old Thomas Fynaski, the firmââ¬â¢s octogenarian founder, seemed to rouse himself from his doze. ââ¬ËWe found the answer by combining the excess potato material with other vegetables to create a breakfast burger,ââ¬â¢ Fred went on. ââ¬ËI have to say the lab boys have done a really good job and created a product that Fyna Foods can be proud of. My family doesnââ¬â¢t usually eat hot breakfasts, but we all tried some the other morning and agreed they were really quite nice.Once we had the product developed I gave it to our marketing people and theyââ¬â¢ve decided to call it ââ¬Å"Bubble and Squeakâ⬠ââ¬â itââ¬â¢s what we used to call leftovers back in the 1960s. I am sure we all remember when we were kids,ââ¬â¢ he joked, ââ¬Ëhow good leftovers used to tas te the next morning. Weââ¬â¢ve decided to advertise it as ââ¬Å"The delicious breakfast alternative to bacon and eggsâ⬠. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWhat about the factor? ââ¬â¢ one of the director asked. ââ¬ËThis product doesnââ¬â¢t look like anything we produce at moment. ââ¬ËWell, you know how our Production Departmentââ¬â¢s managers are,ââ¬â¢ replied Fred. ââ¬ËIf the factory had its way, weââ¬â¢d never produce anything that wasnââ¬â¢t quick and cheap to run through the machines. Anyway, we have agreed to pack the new line in boxes of 24 burgers, which nicely fits our packaging machinery. The factory were pleased with that. ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËHow do the numbers stack up, Fred? ââ¬â¢ asked Daphne Green, the Finance Director. ââ¬ËPretty good, actually,ââ¬â¢ Fred replied as he flicked up a chart. See, we start with the excess potato tonnage from the Supa-Long contract. Thatââ¬â¢s equivalent to sales about 400,000 packs of Bubble and Squeak in the fir st year. We think the Supa-Long contract is going to grow at about 10 percent per annum, so we also need to budget to increase Bubble and Squeakââ¬â¢s sales by that amount each year. We do have a bit of problem with price, which Iââ¬â¢m still working on. The Sales Department is concerned it wonââ¬â¢t be able to move these volumes of product at the price the accountants have given us.Iââ¬â¢m not too worried about that, though, because the product development people, in their normal way, have produced a super premium quality product in the test kitchen ââ¬â a bit too good, really, for the market weââ¬â¢re aiming at. Iââ¬â¢m confident that we can play around with some of the ingredients and quantities and get the product costs down to a level that Sales can live with. ââ¬ËWeââ¬â¢ve got a few rough edges to smooth off,ââ¬â¢ concluded Fred. ââ¬ËBut, overall I think weââ¬â¢ve come up with an excellent solution that lets us take on the Supa-Long contrac t and gives us a great new product for Fyna Foods. There was a general murmur of approval around the table. As it subsided, however, Fred noticed that Bill Wyse, the recently retired Marketing Director of a large transnational food business had his hand raised waiting to catch the chairmanââ¬â¢s eye. As silence returned to the room he spoke for the first time during the meeting. ââ¬ËWell, Fred,ââ¬â¢ he said quietly. ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢ve obviously put a lot of work into this. I can tell you feel youââ¬â¢ve done a great job. But in my humble opinion, you donââ¬â¢t seem to appreciate what marketing is all about. ââ¬â¢ Questions 1.Collect three descriptions of marketing, one from a text, one from a marketing practitioner, and one form someone who does not work in the marketing fied. Which perception seems the closes to Fyna Foods teamââ¬â¢s activities on the Bubble and Squeak project? Justify your choice. 2. From the perspective of Bill Wyse, what differences are th ere between the production stage, the selling stage and the marketing stage of marketing management evolution? 3. In what areas might a food manufacturing company such as Fyna Foods be subject to societal criticisms?
